Welcome to the Weber Graphics Department!
We create the final artwork for the labels that Weber manufactures. While we can handle most types of files and programs, there are certain requirements that will ensure that all pre-press work is completed quickly and correctly with a minimum of delay. The following information will help you figure out the best way to submit your files to us.
Document Specifications
File Format
We accept files from Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PDF (with editing capabilities), Photoshop CS (with layers), Macromedia Freehand (saved as an .eps file), Corel Draw and Quark XPress in their native formats. We can also accept Encapsulated Post Script (.eps) files or PDFs from most programs. CAD software users can send .dxf files, but fonts and scaling do not always carry over, so we require a printout of the file to be sent to us also. Please check with the graphics department before sending any other file formats. We are Macintosh-based so if you are sending PC files, they must be saved in a Mac-compatible format.
Document Setup
• Registration tolerance is +/- 1/32". Keep this in mind for small multi-color objects such as logos.
• All bleeds must extend 1/16" beyond die line (keep in mind the corner radius).
• Borders bleeding off the edge of the label should be at least 1/16" wide.
• All colors must be either PMS (Pantone Matching System) or CYMK (Process). Specify PMS numbers for spot colors.
• Any object not meant to bleed off the edge must be at least 1/16" from the edge.
• Minimum font size is 4 point.
• Indicate zone for varnished areas.
• Contact your account rep for a listing of available die shapes and sizes.
Images
• Photoshop native files (.psd) with all layers intact are the preferred format. Other acceptable formats include .tif or .eps.
• .gif and .jpg files CANNOT be used.
• Images should be saved as CMYK. RGB images can result in color shifts when converted. Black and white images should be saved as grayscale. If you create your own colors, please name them appropriately. If White is used as a printed color, name the spot color "Prints As White" to clearly indicate where white ink should print.
• All images MUST be at least 300 dpi or higher. Web graphics are generally 72 dpi and cannot be used.
• Images should be linked or placed in the document. Do not use embedded images.
• Screens may range from 100% to 1% but keep in mind that ending a screen tint inside the die strike (edge of label) can create an unwanted hard line.
• Line & Rules: Minimum size for a line is .4 pt. and reversed line is .75 pt. Screened rules should be at least 1 pt. to avoid a wavy appearance. Rules should never have a fill color, only a stroke color.
• Indicate the type of bar code needed and position on label. Standard UPC Type A should be at least 80% (prefer 85%) with a height of no less than 3/8".
Typestyles
• All fonts should be sent with the file in a separate folder labeled "Fonts". For Mac users, the Post Script font file and the screen font must be provided. For PC users, the PFB and the PFM must be included.
• Acceptable fonts are Post Script Type 1, TruType, and Open Type. We will match TruType and Open Type fonts with their post Script equivalents whenever possible.
• Fonts should NEVER be stylized in your page layout program. Use the font containing the attribute.
• We will attempt to match any font not included as closely as possible.
• Avoid reversing type out of more than one color. If necessary, the type should have a holding line (outline) to ensure the letters print clean.
• Try to avoid True Type fonts, light type faces in reversed areas and using fonts in photoshop as it tends to make the type blurry and rough.
• If you supply artwork that does not meet our specifications, we reserve the right to modify or re-create the artwork to bring it into spec.
File Transfer
• Files smaller than 2MB can be emailed or sent on a floppy disk.
• Larger files should be sent on a CD-ROM or 100MB Zip disks.
Before you send . . .
• Did you keep a copy?
• Does your file contain the artwork in its original application?
• Are your fonts provided?
• Is it in an application Weber supports (see above)?
• You didn't use low-res web images for the artwork, did you?
